Trump Wins Presidency and NewsPop Poll

President-Elect Donald J. Trump.

(Newspop) — Donald J. Trump, age 70, was elected the 45th president of the United States on Tuesday. He will be sworn into office on January 20, 2017.

The results were unexpected because national polls before the election showed that Mr. Trump’s rival, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, age 69, was in the lead.

Votes are still being counted Wednesday morning, but Mr. Trump has surpassed the 270 electoral votes needed to win the election. The president-elect also won the majority of votes in the NewsPop/PopVox/Close Up Foundation survey. Donald Trump received 45.85 percent of the vote in our survey and Hillary Clinton received 40.49 percent.

Mr. Trump gave a victory speech in New York just before 3am Wednesday morning and said, “Now it’s time for America to bind the wounds of division … To all Republicans and Democrats and independents across this nation, I say it is time for us to come together as one united people.”

Mrs. Clinton is expected to speak this morning.

We will post more information about how kids and teens responded to our survey throughout the day.
