A horse names American Pharoah and jockey Victor Espinoza won the 141st running of the Kentucky Derby horse race at Churchill Downs Saturday, May 2, 2015, in Louisville, Kentucky. The prize was $1.24 million.
The Kentucky Derby is held every year on the first Saturday of May. Many people call the race “the fastest two minutes in sports” or “the most exciting two minutes in sports” because that’s how long it typically lasts. American Pharoah ran 1 1/4 miles in 2:03.02.
The Derby is part of a trio of races called the American Triple Crown. If American Pharaoh goes on to win the Preakness Stakes later this month and the Belmont Stakes in June, he will take the Triple Crown – the biggest prize U.S. in horse racing. (AP Photo/Morry Gash)
