(NewsPop) — Today is International Women’s Day, a day to celebrate the achievements of women but also to remember that women and girls are still subjected to gender inequality around the world.
The injustices faced by women and girls can range from not getting equal pay, to not being allowed to work or attend school, to be being physically abused.
Women’s Day was first observed in the United States on February 28, 1909. The United Nations began celebrating International Women’s Day in 1975.
Here’s a video message from António Guterres, the new Secretary-General of the United Nations, who says, “Women’s rights are human rights, but around the world that message is ignored far too often.”
